Shelby, AL

Tucked along the shores of Lay Lake and Waxahatchee Creek, Shelby is a quiet, unincorporated community in Shelby County with deep historical roots. In the nineteenth century, it was home to the Shelby Iron Company, Alabama's first permanent ironworks. At its peak, the booming industrial outpost grew into a self-contained village with its own school, church, and homes for hundreds of residents, though its wartime production also relied heavily on the forced labor of enslaved workers.

Today, that history is preserved at Shelby Iron Works Park, where historic buildings and old blast furnaces serve as the backdrop for seasonal festivals, community pancake breakfasts, and craft demonstrations. Daily life in Shelby revolves around the water, quiet country roads, and plenty of open space. With the shops, restaurants, and schools of neighboring Columbiana just a short drive away, it offers a peaceful rural retreat for people who want lake access without straying too far from town.
