Shelby, MS

Shelby was established in 1853 when Tom Shelby bought a block of land from the federal government, and it grew into a Bolivar County city in the heart of the Mississippi Delta. The surrounding country is flat, agricultural, and threaded with highways, drainage ditches, and long rows of crops. Shelby’s position also gives it a regional role: it is close to Mound Bayou, Cleveland, and the smaller Delta communities that share the same farming and civil-rights history. Mississippi Highway 32 runs east toward the Mississippi State Penitentiary area, while local streets keep the city’s day-to-day life centered closer to home.

School ties run through North Bolivar Consolidated School District, formed in the 2014 consolidation of the older North Bolivar system. Students in Shelby attend Northside High School, and Brooks Elementary serves part of the surrounding district. The city’s story is also wrapped up in Bolivar County’s Black civic, religious, musical, and agricultural traditions, with nearby Mound Bayou adding another important chapter to the regional map. Shelby feels like a working Delta town: cotton and soybean fields beyond the streets, school buses on the county roads, and a history that keeps turning up in the people, buildings, and communities around it.
