Shelbyville is the county seat of Shelby County, southeast of Indianapolis. Its early transportation history includes Jacob Whetzel's 1818 trail through the New Purchase, linking the Whitewater River area toward the White River. Today Shelbyville has public schools, a public library, manufacturing, agriculture nearby, and a compact courthouse-town center.
