Shellsburg, IA

Shellsburg began in 1854 with 24 lots and two streets, Main and Pearl, in Benton County's early settlement push. Before trains arrived, stagecoaches between Cedar Rapids and Vinton stopped here; the railroad followed in 1869 and turned the town into a county business center. A post office followed in 1856, and the town's early school life grew alongside the new rail connection. Even the name carries a small local argument: one story starts with pioneer John Sells, another points to Schellsburg, Pennsylvania. Either way, the old Sells Street still runs by City Park.

The piece of town history you can still drive over is the Shellsburg Bridge, a concrete-filled spandrel arch over Bear Creek built in 1915 and placed on the National Register in 1998. The Vinton-Shellsburg school district, library, churches, parks, and Main Street businesses keep the everyday network close. Cedar Rapids is within the wider commuting map, but Shellsburg remains a place where the bridge, school, and two old main streets give directions as clearly as any GPS.
