About Shepherd

Shepherd is an Isabella County village along the Salt River, first settled by lumberman Isaac Shepherd and platted in 1866. The post office began as Salt River in 1857, a name that tells you which waterway mattered before the village took its own. Since 1958, the Shepherd Maple Syrup Festival has brought sap, pancakes, music, and a parade to the calendar. Shepherd is central Michigan with a river-town beginning and a maple tradition that turns the village’s name into breakfast.
