Shepherd, TX

Shepherd is a city in San Jacinto County at the junction of U.S. 59, State Highway 150, and county roads about 60 miles north of Houston. The 2020 census counted 2,105 residents. Houston banker and landowner B. A. Shepherd laid out the town in 1875 beside the proposed Houston, East and West Texas Railway. A depot and post office followed, and the town became a local center for sawmilling and agriculture in the East Texas pine region. Shepherd incorporated in 1967 as the area changed around Lake Livingston, completed in 1968.

Shepherd Independent School District gives the city its clearest local institution, while U.S. 59 keeps it tied to the Houston region and is planned for an eventual Interstate 69 upgrade. Lake Livingston State Park and Wolf Creek Park add shoreline, camping, and boating destinations to the surrounding county. Raven Hill, the 1844 home of Sam Houston, adds a historic stop to the same regional map. Shepherd's present shape comes from those overlapping lines: a school-centered city on a north-south highway, with pine-country work in its history and Lake Livingston shaping the wider economy and recreation pattern.
