Sherburn, MN

Sherburn sits in western Martin County between Fairmont and Jackson, with Interstate 90 passing the north end and farm roads spreading south toward Fox Lake country. The settlement’s early story has a rough prairie edge: in the mid-1860s, George Archer kept a sod tavern beside Lake Manyaska, south of the present city. That small stopping place hints at what Sherburn offered from the start — a place to pause, trade, and move through a broad landscape before paved routes and interstate exits set the rhythm.

Water and recreation became part of the local picture in the twentieth century. In 1920, local businessmen organized the Fox Lake Park Company, tying the city to a nearby lakeside destination and giving the community an outing spot alongside its business district. Sherburn also shares its schools through Martin County West, formed in 1988 when Sherburn joined with Trimont and Welcome. The 2020 census counted 1,058 residents. With Fairmont 13 miles east, Jackson 16 miles west, and I-90 at the edge, Sherburn has a clear western-Martin-County role: a small town with prairie distances, a lake story, and a practical connection to larger places.
