About Sherburne

Sherburne is a Chenango County village at the meeting of the Chenango River and Handsome Brook, where the first settlement took shape around 1792 and the village incorporated in 1830. The river still marks the western edge, but the most revealing old map feature may be the Chenango Canal. It opened in 1837, ran through the village for 41 years, and carried hops, lumber, potatoes, wheat, and other farm goods toward the Erie Canal. Remnants are still visible around Main Street and Routes 12 and 12B, with the historical park’s log cabin telling more of the story. Sherburne-Earlville schools sit in the village, tying the old canal town to present-day Chenango County life.
