Sherwood, OH (Village)

Sherwood is a village in Defiance County, Ohio, whose railroad-era beginnings still shape its story. The town was platted in the 1870s as the railroad extended through the county, and local accounts date the name to 1874, when it honored General Isaac N. Sherwood, a Union Civil War officer, politician, and newspaper editor. The village incorporated in 1891, and the 2020 census counted 802 residents. Its setting is the farm-and-small-town landscape of western Ohio, with Defiance serving as the county’s larger regional center.

Sherwood’s civic history has a few details that still give the village a recognizable shape. In 1886, township voters approved a prohibition measure, and Zeno H. Miller became the first mayor after village incorporation, elected on February 18, 1891. Today the village office, Sherwood Branch Library, and local schools provide everyday destinations for reading, learning, and village business. The village’s historic name connects it to a prominent Defiance County figure, while its present map remains grounded in municipal services, school routines, and the surrounding agricultural roads.
