Shoemakersville, PA

Shoemakersville sits on the east bank of the Schuylkill River in northern Berks County, a borough whose name goes straight back to its first settlers, Charles and Henry Shoemaker. The place was founded in 1765 and incorporated as a borough in 1921. Its industrial chapter is part of the town’s physical story: the Merit Underwear Company building on East Noble Avenue is listed in the National Register, a reminder that Shoemakersville once had a substantial apparel-manufacturing side. The river remains the clearest geographic marker, while Route 61 ties the borough to the larger Berks County road network. It reads as a small river borough with an older working-town backbone.
