Shorewood, IL

Shorewood started as a quiet riverside getaway along the DuPage River, where Chicago and Joliet residents built summer cottages during the 1920s. Over the years, those vacation spots turned into year-round homes, and the village incorporated in the late 1950s. As regional highways expanded during the 1970s and beyond, new subdivisions spread west into former farmland. Sitting right next to Joliet and roughly 40 miles southwest of Chicago, Shorewood offers a convenient suburban base with easy access to both I-55 and I-80. Instead of a single historic downtown centered on a train station, local shopping and dining stretch along Route 59 and Jefferson Street. The village offers a broad range of neighborhoods, from established ranch-style homes to master-planned communities. The forest preserve covers hundreds of acres with hiking trails, kayak launches, fishing spots, and a popular dog park. In town, Cene's Four Seasons Park serves as a central hub for sports and community gatherings, including the lively Crossroads Festival every summer. Along with an active public library and numerous neighborhood parks, there is plenty to do locally without having to leave town.

In newer subdivisions, review the HOA rules and monthly dues. School boundaries also vary across town, with students feeding into either Troy or Minooka elementary districts and Joliet West or Minooka high schools. Shorewood is also working on a planned transition to Lake Michigan water by 2030, so it is a good idea to ask how future utility updates might affect your water rates and service lines.
