Shoshone, ID

Shoshone is the Lincoln County seat in Idaho's Magic Valley, and locals pronounce it "Show-shown," with the final e silent. The 2020 census counted 1,653 residents. The city was laid out in 1882 ahead of the Oregon Short Line, and four sets of tracks once ran through the business district - one reason the main street is famously broad. Agriculture, livestock, and irrigation still define the surrounding working landscape, with lava flows limiting the farm ground. Shoshone's older buildings make that geology visible: lava rock appears in homes, churches, businesses, cisterns, and the 1907 county courthouse.

The Bureau of Land Management also has a district and fire-control office here, tied to the lava country around Craters of the Moon and the Great Rift. Mary L. Gooding Memorial Park follows the Little Wood River near Oregon Trail campsites, giving the county seat a green spot beside the desert and railroad grid. The railroad, river, lava, and farm roads all meet in a very small footprint.
