About Shungnak
Shungnak is a city in Northwest Arctic Borough, Alaska, located approximately 150 miles east of Kotzebue along the Kobuk River. Founded in 1899 about ten miles upriver from its current location, the community's name derives from the Iñupiaq word isiŋnaq, meaning jade, a stone found throughout the surrounding area. With a population of 272 at the 2020 census, Shungnak is served by the Northwest Arctic Borough School District.
