Sidney, IA

Sidney is the Fremont County seat, a small southwest Iowa city laid out in 1851 after surveyors staying with the Milton Richards family decided on the town plan. It was originally meant to be called Dayton, but Sidney became the name. County government gives the city a role larger than its population, with the courthouse and local services drawing people from the surrounding farm roads. The 2020 census counted 1,070 residents.

Sidney’s signature event is the Iowa Championship Rodeo, which began in 1923 as a western show for visitors attending the Old Soldiers Reunion. Five days of rodeo performances now bring thousands of visitors, while the parade, rodeo queen contest, high school rodeo band, specialty acts, and dances fill the week. Sidney Community School District keeps the school calendar local, and the Fremont County Historical Society preserves county collections and a museum schoolhouse. Sidney is a small county seat with a very large rodeo week. During the rest of the year, the courthouse square and school calendar bring the town back to its everyday scale.
