Sierra City, CA

Sierra City is a Sierra County census-designated place in the canyon of the North Yuba River, where the 2020 census counted 235 residents. At 4,147 feet above sea level, it sits along California State Route 49 about twelve miles northeast of county seat Downieville. The canyon and the river put the town inside the western Sierra Nevada, northwest of Lake Tahoe and within the Tahoe National Forest.

The California Gold Rush brought hard-rock mining to both sides of the North Yuba River, and the Kentucky Mine just outside town now preserves that history with a stamp mill and mining museum. The Pacific Crest Trail crosses the Sierra Buttes roughly 2,000 feet above Sierra City, adding a high mountain route to the canyon floor. Winters bring heavy snow, while summers are dry and warm. Old mining traces sit alongside cabins, forest roads, and the route toward Downieville, so the town remains a base for understanding this high, river-cut stretch of Sierra County.
