Signal Hill, CA

Operating oil wells still sit among homes and businesses in Signal Hill, a 2.19-square-mile city completely enclosed by Long Beach. Royal Dutch Shell's Alamitos No. 1 struck oil on June 23, 1921, and derricks soon covered the hill and adjoining parts of Long Beach. Signal Hill incorporated in 1924 in part to avoid Long Beach's per-barrel oil tax. The field is now largely depleted but remains moderately productive, so oil infrastructure continues to share the landscape with residential and commercial development. Housing estimates for 2020-2024 put owner occupancy at 50.3 percent and the median owner-occupied value at $783,300; monthly costs for owners with a mortgage were $3,263, while median gross rent was $1,851. The same hill that made oil extraction possible now organizes much of the city's public open space. Signal Hill maintains 11 parks, including Hilltop Park, Discovery Well Park, Sunset View Park, and Panorama Promenade.

The promenade's walking path and exercise stations connect Hilltop and Discovery Well parks, with viewpoints and interpretive signs along the route. Lower on the hill, Signal Hill Park adjoins the civic center and the 14,000-square-foot Signal Hill Public Library, which opened in 2019. The library includes a community room, children's area, technology learning center, study rooms, teen space, local-history room, courtyard, and an upper terrace. Its calendar and adjoining park extend civic activity beyond borrowing books: the city's summer 2026 program included films in the park and ticketed Friday performances in the library courtyard. Signal Hill's compact boundaries therefore place three eras side by side: active remnants of the oil field, parks and trails built around the hill's elevation, and newer civic facilities used for classes, study, meetings, and performances.
