About Silver Lake

Silver Lake is a Kosciusko County town at the southern end of the county, where the 2020 census counted 875 residents. The community was originally called Silver Lakeville and was platted under that name in 1859. The nearby lake supplied the shorter name, while the post office has operated in the community since 1854. Water and roads still give the town its basic shape.

Silver Lake's town hall became Indiana's first Village Post Office in 2013, bringing mail service into a civic building. The Silver Lake Historic District preserves the commercial center's older streets and buildings, while local roads connect the town with the surrounding Lake Township countryside. Silver Lake is a small Indiana town with an early post office, a lake beside the townsite, a historic district, and a civic center that gained a new postal role. Its original name is longer, but the local map is easy to remember. The lake remains the town's clearest geographic reference today.
