Simmesport, LA

Simmesport sits on the west bank of the Atchafalaya River in eastern Avoyelles Parish, at a place where Louisiana’s waterways do much of the shaping. Old River links the Red, Atchafalaya, and Mississippi rivers, and the town’s position near that junction gives it a working, water-oriented geography. U.S. Highway 1 and the Kansas City Southern rail line run through the broader setting, while docks, levees, fishing, and river traffic keep the Atchafalaya close to everyday life.

The town was founded by Bennet Barton Simmes, whose White Hall Plantation stood across the river. An early dock and warehouse were established in 1837, and a post office named Simmes Port followed in 1840, details that show how quickly the river became part of the town’s character. During the Civil War, the landing figured in the Red River Campaign. In the present day, Simmesport serves as a gateway to the Atchafalaya basin, with a small-town main route, a long levee horizon, and the broad wetland landscape pressing close on both sides.
