Sioux City, IA

Sioux City stands at the navigational head of the Missouri River and borders Nebraska to the southwest and South Dakota to the northwest. The Woodbury County seat extends into Plymouth County and is the principal city of a five-county metropolitan area. Its population rose from 85,797 in 2020 to an estimated 86,875 in 2024. Yankton Sioux people inhabited the area when Spanish and French fur trappers arrived in the eighteenth century. Sioux City later became a transportation point for westbound Mormon migrants and travelers bound for Wyoming goldfields. The Sergeant Floyd Monument marks the burial place of the Lewis and Clark Expedition’s only member to die during the journey. On the riverfront, Chris Larsen Park includes the Sergeant Floyd River Museum and the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center.
