Sisseton, SD

Sisseton is Roberts County's seat and the city at the center of a broader Lake Traverse Reservation landscape. Its name comes from the Sisseton division of the Dakota people, and the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate's reservation and Agency Village lie close to town. That connection is visible in the region's institutions: Sisseton Wahpeton College offers undergraduate and vocational programs, and its Song to the Great Spirit building uses four seated drummers around a drum as its shape. The tribal headquarters nearby brings administrative, social, educational, and housing services into the same regional map.

County-seat functions fill in the town's civic side, with the 1902 Roberts County Courthouse standing on a hill above the city. The Joseph N. Nicollet Tower and Interpretive Center, 3.5 miles west, points to the area's survey and mapping history. Sisseton also carries an extended commercial district serving agriculture, livestock, light industry, health care, and independent businesses.
