About Sitka city and
Sitka is a unified city-borough in Southeast Alaska, set on Baranof Island and part of Chichagof Island in the Alexander Archipelago. It was under Russian rule from 1799 to 1867, known then as New Archangel, and was the site of the Alaska transfer ceremony after the U.S. purchase. Sitka National Historical Park, the Russian Bishop's House, St. Michael's Cathedral, and a large harbor system give the city unusual depth. The surrounding mountains and Pacific setting are just as important.
