Six Shooter Canyon, AZ

Six Shooter Canyon is a Gila County census-designated place just south of Globe, where Pinal Creek runs north through the Globe area toward the Salt River and Theodore Roosevelt Lake. The CDP is bordered by Icehouse Canyon, Pinal, and Globe, so its everyday geography is tied to the larger mining city without being part of the city itself. Homes and roads run through a dry canyon-and-foothill setting, with the Globe-Miami area supplying the broader work, school, and service network.

The place's most distinctive landmark is the Gila Pueblo campus of Eastern Arizona College, now part of Gila Community College. The 22-acre campus includes reconstructed ruins of a fourteenth-century Salado pueblo; archaeologists excavated the site in the 1920s, the National Park Service held it for a time, and it became a college campus in the 1970s. That gives Six Shooter Canyon an unusual overlap of desert geography, archaeology, and community education. It is a small place beside Globe, but the creek, the canyon roads, and the Gila Pueblo grounds give it a clear identity of its own.
