Skamokawa Valley, WA

Skamokawa Valley is a Wahkiakum County census-designated place north of Cathlamet, with the smaller community of Sleepy Hollow included within its boundaries. The unincorporated community of Skamokawa lies directly south, so the names can sound interchangeable even though they describe different places. The valley is part of the Wahkiakum School District, a K–12 system serving roughly 430 students across the county. The 2020 census counted 487 residents. Fog and shifting river weather are as much a part of the lower Columbia setting as the roads and wooded hills.

The name reaches back to Wahkiakum Chief Skamokawa, whose name is often translated from Chinook as “smoke over the water.” Lewis and Clark encountered Wahkiakum and Kathlamet people during the expedition's winter on the lower Columbia. Nearby Skamokawa's National Historic District preserves the older pattern of a water-based Columbia River community, with roads, tidal channels, and river weather still shaping how the valley is understood. Skamokawa Valley is the broader rural setting around that historic river settlement, with homes, school routes, and wooded hills stretching north from the Columbia.
