Skillman, NJ

Skillman is a Somerset County CDP inside Montgomery Township, though the Skillman postal area spreads across a much larger piece of the township. The place’s name comes from the Skillman family, whose New Jersey story reaches back to Thomas Skillman’s 1729 purchase of farmland along the Millstone River. The railroad later put the family name on a station, and a post office, hay press, feed store, and hardware store grew around it. Skillman is a New Jersey hamlet with a small census footprint and a much bigger mailing-address shadow.
