Skokomish, WA

Skokomish is a Mason County census-designated place at the delta of the Skokomish River on Hood Canal. The 2020 census counted 615 residents. The CDP covers about 6.9 square miles of low river and estuary country, with forested slopes and the canal shaping the horizon. It is also the headquarters of the Skokomish Indian Tribe, whose Tribal Center stands on North Tribal Center Road. The Skokomish River remains the main physical thread through the settlement.

The community is part of the Skokomish Indian Reservation, home of the Skokomish, Twana, Klallam, and Chimakum people. Tribal government, cultural work, land stewardship, and community programs help give the place its civic center; the tribe’s newspaper, The Sounder, carries local news, while Lucky Dog Casino is a visible tribally operated business. Fishing, the river, and the canal connect everyday life to the surrounding water. Skokomish is a small Washington community whose map is inseparable from tribal government, river ecology, and the Hood Canal shore.
