Slater, MO

Slater is a Saline County city whose timeline begins before its formal town layout. A post office was operating by 1878, and the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad established the town in the late 1880s to house railroad employees and their families. The ground also sits in a much older travel story: the area was part of the Santa Fe Trail corridor before the railroad arrived. That sequence gives Slater a recognizable rail-town shape, with the post office preceding the town and the railroad giving it a reason to grow.

Present-day Slater is organized around the Slater School District, the Slater Public Library, and the streets of a small Saline County city. The library's Main Street location keeps a civic institution in the middle of town, while the State Historical Society of Missouri preserves early city records from the years when the railroad community was taking form.
