Smethport, PA

Smethport is McKean County’s borough seat in the forested hills of northwestern Pennsylvania and the state’s first Route 6 Heritage Community. Dutch land surveyors explored the area in 1807, and the town took its name from Raymond and Theodore de Smeth, Dutch bankers who financed the land investment. A water-powered sawmill helped establish the early settlement, while the former millpond now sits within Hamlin Park. County offices, schools, the courthouse, and local businesses give Smethport a service-center role for the surrounding rural roads and mountain communities.

The borough’s Civil War story is still visible in the Bucktail Muster, when re-enactors gather around the recruiting drive that Thomas L. Kane organized in 1861. Smethport is also a regional base for outdoor places: Kinzua Bridge State Park lies nearby, and its rebuilt skywalk follows the remaining towers of a railroad viaduct partly destroyed by a 2003 tornado. Hamlin Library, the Old Jail Museum, borough utilities, and the Smethport Area School District fill in the present-day civic map. Smethport carries county business, forest-country work, and a very specific military history in the same compact town center.
