Smith Center, KS

Smith Center is the seat of Smith County, set where U.S. 281 meets U.S. 36 in north-central Kansas. The city was founded in 1871, and its first post office opened in 1873. County government, farm roads, and the long view across the plains still organize the town, but Smith Center keeps an unusually full collection of reminders from earlier days. The Smith County Historical Museum spreads across four buildings, and the courthouse lawn carries a brick Veterans Memorial.

The best local oddities sit just outside the daily route. Wagner Park holds an 1883 Dutch Mill that was moved in 1938, damaged by fire in 1955, and rebuilt as a gathering place. Nine miles north, the Higley Cabin marks the spot where Brewster Higley wrote the words to \"Home on the Range\" in 1872. Back in town, Hubbard Stadium and the Smith Center Redmen keep sports on the calendar. Smith Center’s local scoop is that its history comes with a mill, a song, and a football field.
