Smith River, CA

Smith River is an unincorporated Del Norte County community near the Oregon line, on the plain and estuary named for the Smith River. The 2020 census counted 906 residents. A post office opened here in 1863, and the area’s later story grew around farming, river water, and the coast road. Smith River is also the headquarters of the Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation, so tribal government, family services, language work, environmental stewardship, and cultural continuity are part of the community’s present-day map.

The Smith River Plain’s lily bulb industry is another defining local thread, with growers, tribal staff, county agencies, and watershed groups working through current water-quality questions. That agricultural landscape sits beside the Smith River National Recreation Area and the larger redwood-and-river country of Del Norte. The town’s nickname, the “Lily Bulb Capital of the World,” comes from that unusual farming history, but the place is more than a crop label: it is a Tolowa community, a rural service center, and a gateway to the river and coast. Crescent City is the nearest incorporated city, while Brookings, Oregon, lies just across the state line.
