Smiths Ferry, ID

Smiths Ferry is a small mountain community tucked along a wide bend in the North Fork Payette River. Located along State Highway 55 about halfway between Boise and McCall, the area originally grew around a nineteenth-century river crossing used by ranchers heading into the high valleys. Today, that scenic stretch of highway serves as the main mountain route connecting the Treasure Valley to the lakes and ski towns up north.

Daily life here centers on the water, the surrounding national forest, and the change of seasons. During the warmer months, rafters and kayakers pull off the river after floating the popular Cabarton stretch, while anglers and campers take advantage of easy water access along the shoreline. Winter turns the valley into a quiet base camp for snowmobilers heading into the backcountry trails. It offers a laid-back canyon retreat for people who value towering pines, river views, and outdoor adventure right outside their door.
