When people in Middle Tennessee think of Smyrna, the massive Nissan assembly plant on Nissan Drive is usually the first thing that comes to mind. Opening in the early 1980s, the facility quickly grew into one of the region's top employers, rolling out popular vehicles like the Rogue and Pathfinder. It sits just east of the original town center, serving as both a major economic anchor and a familiar landmark for locals. Having such a large industrial presence alongside quiet residential neighborhoods gives Smyrna a grounded, hardworking feel, with convenient interstate access making commutes into Nashville straightforward.

Aviation is another big piece of the local character. Smyrna Airport originally served as a World War II training airfield and later operated as Sewart Air Force Base before transitioning to civilian hands. Today, it ranks as the busiest general aviation airport in Tennessee, shared by corporate charters, flight schools, maintenance facilities, and the Tennessee Army National Guard. You will often see planes and helicopters practicing maneuvers in the open skies overhead, and the surrounding business park supplies a steady stream of aerospace and logistics jobs to the area.

At the historic center of town, Smyrna's railroad roots take center stage in the Depot District. The restored wooden train station on Front Street anchors a walkable pocket of local restaurants, coffee shops, and small businesses. Locals often describe the community around the theme of "trains, planes, and automobiles," and the depot area is where people gather for hometown traditions. Throughout the year, Front Street closes to traffic for lively street festivals, including Simply Smyrna, the Depot District BBQ Festival, classic car shows, and the huge Depot Days celebration each fall.

Beyond the factories and flight paths, Smyrna offers plenty of green space and recreation. The town maintains a growing greenway system connecting neighborhood parks and sports facilities. Lee Victory Recreation Park serves as the main hub for youth sports leagues, holiday fireworks, and the annual Top Gun Night Run 5K. Nearby, the Smyrna Outdoor Adventure Center features indoor rock climbing, nature exhibits, and kayak rentals for paddling along the Stones River and Percy Priest Lake. Between the neighborhood trails, community centers, and water access, getting outside to unwind is always close at hand.
