About Sneedville

Sneedville is Hancock County's seat and its only city, sitting in the Clinch River valley in northeastern Tennessee. Settlement reached this part of the mountains in the 1790s, and the town later grew around the county courthouse, schools, and river valley roads. The Old County Jail, an 1860 building on Jail Street, had been home to the county historical and genealogical society and a Melungeon museum before a 2025 fire stripped its interior and roof. Its remaining cells are now artifacts of town history. Sneedville is a courthouse town with a strong sense of its setting: the Clinch close by, steep ridges beyond it, and county business concentrated in one small seat.
