Snelling, CA

Set along the banks of the Merced River about 17 miles north of Merced, Snelling is a quiet community located right where the Central Valley meets the Sierra Nevada foothills. With fewer than 300 residents, daily life moves at an easy country pace among open farmland, orchards, and rolling hills. It is also one of the oldest settlements in the county, originally established as a Gold Rush-era way station in the 1850s.

Much of that heritage is still visible at the 1857 courthouse, recognized as the oldest surviving county courthouse in California. The community itself is simple and close-knit, centered around a local K-8 elementary school, a post office, and river access for weekend fishing. For bigger errands, State Route 59 runs directly south into Merced, offering a quick 20-minute commute to major shopping, healthcare, and UC Merced while keeping neighborhood life peaceful.
