Snow Shoe, PA

Snow Shoe Township occupies a large, forested part of Centre County, with the borough of Snow Shoe surrounded by the township and Clearfield County along the western edge. The name comes with a story: local tradition says a pair of snowshoes was found at an Indigenous village within the township's present boundaries. The township was created in 1840, and early settlement expanded through villages, farms, lumber work, coal, and the rail lines that connected the mountain country with Bellefonte.

Snow Shoe's landscape still carries that high-country history. The township includes Moshannon and a string of smaller settlements, with roads climbing through woods and ridges toward State College, Bellefonte, and Clearfield County. Local school routes tie families to the broader Centre County education network, while nearby forest and mountain roads shape outdoor work and recreation. This is Centre County at its western edge: long ridges, old mining and timber routes, scattered villages, and a borough tucked inside a much larger township.
