Society Hill, SC

Society Hill sits on high ground above the Pee Dee River in northern Darlington County, right where U.S. 15 and U.S. 52 meet. Founded in 1736, it is the oldest community in the county, with roots that go back to early Welsh settlers and the historic St. David's Academy. The area once served as an influential river hub and educational center that produced some of the region's prominent civic leaders. Today, it has settled into a quiet, close-knit town of around 400 residents surrounded by Carolina countryside.

That long history is still visible across town, especially at the Society Hill Library. First established in 1822 as one of South Carolina's earliest circulating libraries, it remains an active community staple with a welcoming modern branch on Carrigan Street. Living here offers a slow, neighborly pace with convenient connections across the region. U.S. 15 provides a quick drive into Hartsville and Bennettsville, while U.S. 52 takes you right into Darlington and Cheraw for everyday shopping and dining.
