Somerset, TX

Somerset is a Bexar County city about 15 miles southwest of San Antonio, with 1,756 residents in the 2020 census. Baptist families from Somerset, Kentucky, settled nearby in 1848, and the present town was laid out in 1909 along the Artesian Belt Railroad. Oil changed the scale of the place: a 1913 discovery started a boom, with refineries and a pipeline tying Somerset's crude to San Antonio. Coal mining, farming, fruit and vegetable growing, ranching, and oilfield work all became part of the local story. Somerset still has a clear center. Somerset ISD serves the surrounding area, and City Park sits in the heart of town with walking trails, a playground, picnic areas, courts, and open sports fields. City Hall's calendar carries civic events, and local businesses and civic groups fill the spaces between school, park, and highway. Somerset is a San Antonio-edge city where an oil-boom origin meets a working rural landscape.
