Somerville, AL

Somerville sits along Alabama State Route 67 in central Morgan County, with Town Creek draining east toward Cotaco Creek and the Tennessee River. It served as Morgan County’s seat from 1818 to 1891, when the courthouse moved to Decatur. That change left Somerville with a different civic role but a strong historical center; the old courthouse story still marks the town’s years as a county seat. The town took its name from Robert M. Somerville, tying the local map to an early Alabama figure.

Today Somerville is part of the Decatur area while retaining its own main-street scale. Morgan County schools serve local children through two K-8 schools and a high school, and the town’s position between Decatur and the eastern county roads keeps it connected to larger jobs and services. Route 67 runs northwest to Decatur and southeast toward Baileyton, tracing the same practical pattern that has always mattered here: people, farm goods, and county business moving through Town Creek country. Somerville’s character comes from that overlap of old courthouse history and an active rural crossroads.
