Sonoita, AZ

Sonoita is a Santa Cruz County census-designated place in the high grasslands between the Santa Rita and Patagonia mountains. The 2020 census counted 803 residents. Its name and settlement story follow Sonoita Creek, whose watercourses run through the valley toward Patagonia and the Santa Cruz River. The Santa Fe Railroad established Sonoita as a cattle-shipping station in 1882, and the area could send as many as 3,000 head a day toward market during the railroad era. The tracks are gone from much of the route, but the old rail corridor still shows why Sonoita sits where it does.

These days, people know Sonoita for ranch country, the Santa Cruz County Fair and Rodeo, and the vineyards that made the valley Arizona wine country. State Routes 82 and 83 meet here, carrying traffic between Patagonia, Elgin, Nogales, and Tucson. Sonoita Creek connects the valley's ranches, vineyards, and wildlife areas, while the mountains keep the horizon close on every side. Sonoita is a high-desert crossroads with a railroad past and a modern reputation built from grass, grapes, and mountain distances.
