Sonoma's 8.5-acre Plaza functions as a civic front yard rather than only a historic landmark. City Hall shares the square with fountains, a duck pond, a rose garden, play structures, picnic tables, and an amphitheater; the city also uses it for festivals and seasonal events. On Tuesday evenings from May through early September in 2026, the Plaza market paired farm and artisan vendors with prepared food and live music. This active center sits within a 2.74-square-mile city whose population was 10,739 in 2020. For 2020–2024, the bureau estimated that 34.3 percent of residents were at least 65 years old, giving added relevance to public spaces and programs that do not require leaving town. Sonoma is also the namesake center of the Sonoma Valley wine area, set between the Mayacamas Mountains to the east and Sonoma Mountains to the west. Layers of California history are unusually accessible around the same square.

Mission San Francisco Solano was founded in 1823; the Sonoma Barracks followed in 1836, and the Bear Flag party proclaimed the California Republic in June 1846. Today those buildings and General Vallejo's home are units of Sonoma State Historic Park, open as museums and grounds rather than sealed monuments. Outdoor options extend from almost 80 acres of city parks to the 2.4-mile Sonoma Overlook Trail, which climbs about 400 feet from a trailhead a few blocks north of the Plaza, and the 98-acre Montini Preserve with 1.8 miles of trails. Sonoma Valley Regional Library adds storytimes, teen activities, technology help, and summer programs; its 2026 calendar included free weekday lunches for children and outdoor storytimes in neighborhood parks and the Plaza. Wine tourism is conspicuous; the Plaza, trails, museums, market, and library also give residents a dense network of public destinations.
