Sonora, KY

Sonora is a Hardin County city at the meeting of Kentucky Routes 84 and 720, with Interstate 65 running along its eastern edge. Elizabethtown, the county seat, lies north on I-65, while Munfordville sits south. The city's first chapter was railroad work: in the late 1850s, an L&N construction camp called Bucksnort grew around the line, a name said to echo the sound of early locomotives. When a depot opened in 1859, the settlement became Sonora, possibly after Sonora, Mexico, where one railroad contractor had lived.

Today Sonora's local map is a set of connections. Route 84 carries traffic through the town, Route 720 reaches the Hardin-LaRue county line, and I-65 puts a small city within reach of larger county services and regional jobs. Hardin County lists Sonora among its area cities and communities, while city government and local civic life remain centered around the older crossroads. Sonora's character comes from that railroad beginning and the roads that replaced the depot as the main way people pass through.
