Sonora, TX

Sonora is the Sutton County seat on the I-10 corridor in West Texas, where Exits 400 and 404 put the city between San Angelo and Del Rio. The 2020 census counted 2,502 residents. Rancher Charlie Adams established the community in 1889, it became the county seat in 1890, and Sonora incorporated in 1917. That sequence still shows in the city's working role: courthouse, ranch-country services, schools, and highway traffic meet in one compact county center. The city's cultural map extends beyond the courthouse.

The Miers House Museum and Old Sonora Ice House Ranch Museum hold local history, Eaton Hill Nature Center adds more than three miles of trails, and the Caverns of Sonora sit about eight miles west. Sonora ISD handles local schooling, with Howard County Junior College providing a regional higher-education connection, while I-10 keeps the city tied to the larger region. Sonora's local scoop is the combination of a working ranch county seat and an unusually strong museum-and-cavern circuit just outside town.
