Sophia, WV

Sophia is a Raleigh County town that incorporated in 1912 and took its name from Sophia McGinnis, whose home stood between the town’s two tunnels. That detail puts the place in its setting: a compact municipal center shaped by rail cuts, coal country, and the roads that connect the southern Raleigh County hills. Town Hall is still on Railroad Avenue, and Sophia runs its own elections and local administration.

Sophia’s story fits the larger southern West Virginia pattern without disappearing into it. Railroads opened the coalfields, and coal camps grew around the branch lines; Sophia became a service town for that wider mining landscape. Today, the name, the tunnels, Railroad Avenue, and the town hall carry more of the local character than a long list of attractions. It’s an Appalachian town with a very specific origin story: one resident’s home between two tunnels became the name on the sign, and the rail-and-coal geography still shows why the town sits where it does.
