Soquel’s drinking-water story changed materially on December 1, 2025, when Pure Water Soquel began replenishing the local groundwater basin with purified water. The Mid-County Groundwater Basin is the area’s sole drinking-water source, and long-term overdraft had allowed seawater intrusion to threaten wells near Monterey Bay. The new system takes treated wastewater through ozone, microfiltration, reverse osmosis, ultraviolet light, and advanced oxidation before conveying it to injection wells. Those wells recharge the basin and create a barrier against further saltwater movement. This is infrastructure rather than a visitor attraction, but it directly shapes present-day life in an unincorporated community where household water depends on one coastal aquifer.

Soquel Creek is also visible in public space. Heart of Soquel County Park forms a linear parkway beside the water, with a plaza, viewing decks, picnic space, public art, and interpretive signs. An all-access trail and boardwalk completed in 2021 connects the plaza with Main Street and Soquel Elementary School while passing restored creek habitat. Anna Jean Cummings County Park supplies a larger recreation site with soccer and baseball fields, playgrounds, picnic areas, public art known as the Skyballs, and multiuse trails climbing toward open views. Travel along the community’s main commercial corridor changed in December 2025, when Santa Cruz County completed its Soquel Drive project; the 5.6-mile corridor received resurfacing and a mix of buffered and protected bicycle lanes.

Soquel counted 9,980 people in 2020. For 2020–2024, 72.7 percent of occupied homes were owner-occupied, the median owner-occupied home value was $957,300, and workers’ mean travel time was 23.0 minutes. That five-year profile also puts residents age 65 or older at 22.7 percent of Soquel and those under 18 at 20.3 percent. Creekside paths and playing fields offer the visible public realm; beneath them, aquifer recharge has become equally important to how Soquel can continue to function.
