South Canal, OH

South Canal is an unincorporated CDP in western Newton Township, Trumbull County, with the Newton Falls area immediately to its north and east. The 1.7-square-mile community sits within the Youngstown–Warren metropolitan area, but its footprint is still made up of local roads, homes, and the wooded and rolling terrain typical of this corner of the Mahoning Valley. The 2020 census counted 1,101 residents, a number that gives South Canal more of a settled neighborhood feel than its unincorporated label might suggest.

The place is best understood through its township setting. Newton Township was formed from the Connecticut Western Reserve, and the East Branch and West Branch of the Mahoning River run through the wider area. Newton Falls grew around mills and waterpower, and the surviving Newton Falls Covered Bridge, built about 1831 over the East Branch, remains one of the area's standout historic structures. South Canal sits on the west side of that older local network, close enough to share its schools, roads, and valley landmarks while keeping its own name on the map. It is a small piece of Trumbull County's transition from early mills to a modern metropolitan edge.
