About South Cle Elum

South Cle Elum is a Kittitas County town that exists because the Milwaukee Road put its main line just south of Cle Elum. In 1909, the railway chose Cle Elum as a division point, then platted South Cle Elum when the tracks ended up about a mile south. Shops, bunkers, and a depot followed, and the town incorporated in 1911. The restored Milwaukee Road depot now houses railroad artifacts, while the former right-of-way became Iron Horse State Park. South Cle Elum is a railroad town with the old rail yard still legible in the depot, the trail, and the spaces built for crews.
