About South El Monte

Two engineered river corridors help define South El Monte: the Rio Hondo runs along the west, the San Gabriel River along the east, and both enter Whittier Narrows immediately south of the city. The area remained largely agricultural through the 1930s, then attracted industrial development around rail lines and new freeways before and after World War II. South El Monte incorporated on July 30, 1958, with about 3,900 residents and barely one square mile; later annexations expanded it to roughly 2.8 square miles. The city's current profile says industrial uses occupy 54 percent of that land, compared with 26 percent for housing; factories and residential blocks consequently sit close together. Whittier Narrows Recreation Area is the largest nearby public landscape and lies within South El Monte.

The 1,492-acre county park includes lakes for boating and fishing, bicycle trails, sports fields, a BMX track, fitness areas, a nature center, and the Bosque del Rio Hondo natural area. On Central Avenue, the city Community Center runs after-school activities, arts and enrichment classes, sports leagues, aquatics, day camps, and seasonal events. The neighboring South El Monte Library has children's and teen areas, public computers, wireless printing, online collections, and Metro TAP cards. Foothill Transit Line 269 links El Monte Station with South El Monte, the Whittier Narrows park and nature center, and Montebello. The city also subsidizes selected monthly bus passes for eligible residents and runs Dial-A-Ride for older or disabled residents.
