Daily life in South Gate centers around two main spots: South Gate Park and the shops along Tweedy Mile. The park serves as the community's main gathering place, featuring ball fields, playgrounds, a municipal golf course, and a large sports center with an indoor pool and gym. On Monday mornings, locals stop by for the weekly farmers market near the corner of the grounds. Just down the road, Tweedy Boulevard forms the city's walkable commercial core, filled with family-owned restaurants, bakeries, and small businesses. Across the 710 Freeway and the Los Angeles River, the Hollydale neighborhood offers a quieter residential feel with its own community parks and green spaces.

South Gate takes its name from its days as the southern entrance to Rancho San Antonio, a Spanish land grant from the early 1800s. The area was mostly cattle pastures and bean fields until it officially incorporated as a city in 1923. Heavy manufacturing arrived quickly after, turning the town into an industrial powerhouse. Major employers like Firestone Tire and General Motors built large assembly plants here, bringing thousands of factory jobs and fueling the development of the tidy residential neighborhoods that still define the community.

Getting around town without a car is easy thanks to the city-run Get Around Town Express bus, which runs regular loops through South Gate and Hollydale. The shuttle connects residents directly to local schools, shopping centers, City Hall, and the East Los Angeles College South Gate campus.

Residents also have access to local cultural spots, including the South Gate Museum and Art Gallery located near City Hall. The gallery occupies a historic 1930s building featuring preserved WPA murals, hosting local history exhibits and community art shows throughout the year.
