South Heart, ND

South Heart is a Stark County city on the south side of the Heart River, part of the Dickinson micropolitan area. The 2020 census counted 394 residents. North Dakota Highway 10, the BNSF rail corridor, and roads toward Dickinson and Interstate 94 give the city a practical regional map. South Heart School keeps a pre-kindergarten-through-twelfth-grade campus in town, while Heart River cooperative teams connect local athletics with neighboring schools. The South Heart fire protection district adds another local institution to a city whose services are concentrated along a few streets near the river and railway.

The first permanent settlement dates to 1881, when the Northern Pacific built a station about a mile and a half west of the present town. A school followed in 1887, and the city's name came from its position south of the Heart River. South Heart was founded as a city in 1908. Today, the rail line, Highway 10, school campus, fire district, and Heart River valley still give the place its shape. Dickinson handles larger regional errands, while South Heart keeps the daily civic pieces close to home.
