South Hill, WA

Sitting on the plateau just south of downtown Puyallup, South Hill is a sprawling suburban community that has grown rapidly over the past few decades. Even though most homes here use a Puyallup mailing address, the area is unincorporated Pierce County land without a formal city council or historic town square. What used to be quiet farmland and timber lots has filled in with residential subdivisions, cul-de-sacs, and modern housing developments across roughly twenty square miles. It gives newcomers plenty of neighborhood options with a classic suburban feel close to the rest of the Puget Sound region.

Because South Hill is unincorporated, local road maintenance, planning, and emergency services are managed directly by Pierce County. Everyday activity centers along Meridian Avenue East, the main commercial artery running straight through the plateau. This lively stretch has everything you need for weekly errands, from grocery stores, home improvement centers, and big-box retailers to local eateries and the area's main movie theater. Just off the strip is Thun Field, a charming county airport where locals love having breakfast at the runway cafe while watching private planes take off against views of Mount Rainier.

Commuting is part of the rhythm for many residents, with easy access to major employers across Tacoma, Seattle, Olympia, and nearby Joint Base Lewis-McChord. State Route 512 connects the hill to Interstate 5, and the Sounder train station in downtown Puyallup gives rail commuters a relaxing direct route into downtown Seattle. Having a car is essential for getting around comfortably, particularly since traffic along Meridian can get busy during peak hours. Pierce Transit runs buses through the corridor and connects to regional lines at the South Hill Mall transit center just down the hill.

For fresh air and recreation, the 40-acre Heritage Recreation Center serves as the primary gathering spot, hosting lively weekend youth sports leagues, baseball tournaments, and community events. Winding through the trees behind the complex is the Nathan Chapman Memorial Trail, a paved 1.6-mile path through wetlands and forested greenbelts connecting to South Hill Community Park. The trail honors a local Green Beret who died serving in Afghanistan in 2002. Along with neighborhood pocket parks tucked into individual subdivisions, these shared green spaces give residents a peaceful place to walk, jog, and enjoy the outdoors.
