South Houston is a small, independent city located on the southeast side of the Houston metro area, bordering Pasadena with direct access to Interstate 45 and Highway 3. The town started out in the early 1900s as a quiet farming community known for strawberries and figs, and local lore still celebrates the 1920s mayor and circus owner who used his elephants to help grade Spencer Highway. As the Houston Ship Channel and regional industry expanded, the town grew into a bustling, working-class community. Most people commute by car, with quick drives to Hobby Airport, Pasadena plants, the Ship Channel, or downtown Houston.
